Getting to know the citizens of Brussels, taking the time to listen to someone else’s life story, their souvenirs, their daily routine … Such was the project underlying Bruxelles nous appartient (‘Brussels is ours’), developed in the framework of Brussels 2000. Equipped with a recorder, anyone who wanted to go and discover the city could do so throughout the year. They would first meet their neighbours, then record and preserve the traces of their one-on-one interviews and conversations, and lastly make available to interested listeners these extracts from a ‘collective memory of Brussels’.
>These recordings of people talking about Brussels constitute a live, plentiful and documentary material. They also constitute the starting point of Vous dites/U zegt, created by the Dutch- and French-speaking companies Dito’Dito and Transquinquennal. An ambitious ‘act of collective creativity’ on the border between fiction and reality, the show draws on different media to give us the stories of Brussels residents as they call up their memories of the city…
