In het bos / Dans les bois › Transquinquennal

An old laboratory somewhere in the jungles of the Congo. A group of Belgian scientists are conducting research on bonobos, those apes so closely related to humans. Alongside them we meet a socio-linguist, an agronomist trying to grow giant vegetables, and a developer who wants to turn the place into a tourist theme park. A neuro-psychologist, sent by Professor Takamura, joins the team…

The Transquinquennal company and the ex-members of Dito’Dito – now KVS – become accomplices again after several years. In het bos / In the woods was written especially for them by the Japanese playwright Oriza Hirata (1962), considered to be the leading figure of contemporary theatre in Japan. Also a playwright, director, director of Tokyo’s Agora Komaba theatre and the Seinendan company, and a professor at Osaka University, Oriza Hirata is the author of some thirty plays, including Tokyo Notes (winner of the Kishida Kunio Prize).

Oeuvre de commande, "In het bos/Dans les bois" se passe au Congo. Parce que la belgitude, vue du Japon, hors le chocolat et les gaufres, est une notion évanescente, alors que l'ancienne colonie fait l'objet d'une foule d'écrits eux-mêmes reliés à l'histoire de la Belgique. Oriza Hirata a écrit en japonais cette tranche d'existence, jouée en français et en néerlandais, d'un groupe de chercheurs passionnés par les moeurs des bonobos, ces singes si proches de nous.
