This year, Transquinquennal has been invited to organise a master class in the framework of the École des Maîtres.
‘Bargaining’ is the theme that Transquinquennal proposed to participants of L’École des Maîtres for this 2017 session.
“The worst thing you can possibly do when you bargain for a deal is seem desperate to make it. That makes the other guy smell blood, and then you’re dead. The best thing you can do is bargaining from strength, and leverage is the biggest strength you can have. Leverage is having something the other guy wants. Or better yet, needs. Or best of all, simply can’t do without.” Comme l’écrit Donald Trump dans « the Art of the Deal » (Donald Trump & Tony Schwartz, Ballantine Books, 1987).
The term ‘bargaining’ has become pejorative. It brings to mind shady dealings, under-the-counter stuff, dishonest compromises – and worse. But bargaining is like lying: although we point our finger at the word, it is a common practice, present in all of us. Isn’t bargaining at the heart of our social, economic and political relations? Do we not constantly haggle with ourselves?
After a bargaining session in Udine (‘Contrattazione’), Transquinquennal is settling for 13 days at the Balsamine in Brussels with the young Italian, Portuguese, French and Belgian actors of L’École des Maîtres and will present the profit made at the end of this second round of creative bargaining on 11 & 12 September at 20:00 (free entrance upon reservation).
Afterwards the show will travel to Rome (Teatro India – ShortTheatre Festival), Reims, Caen and Coimbra.
The Ecole des Maîtres is an international, advanced level master class with an itinerant format. The workshop is delivered at different sites within the European countries participating in the project. The Ecole is dedicated to young professional European actors and offers participants the opportunity to meet some of the most important directors on the contemporary theatre scene.
