This is approximately how CONVIVES (“Guests”) starts, the text Eugène Savitskaya wrote for Transquinquennal.

Wham! Once this little seed has been planted in the mind of the protagonists, a dishevelled and provoking conversation will start to grow, far away from cabbages and roses, where philosophy, the thinking process of each one of them, will be trying to make a child with the others’. This experiment involves some risks: to leave human beings of the masculine sex by themselves during one hour and a half is liable to come to a bad end: one foot in the guardroom, and the other in the pub. But notwithstanding, it is a truly free exchange we are attending, a digestion time. We revisted at the double and in group these ancient monuments which are the foundations of the way we live in our Western societies, some sort of self-government program in jauntly and exhilaratingly sketched up, in which politics rub shoulders with poetics and where satire – à la Swift – evolves from biting to frankly carnivorous, and cannibalistic.

Eugène Savitzkaya is a Belgian writer from Russian and Polish descent. He has published a about 30 novels, poetry books and theatre texts, mostly at the French publishing house Editions de Minuit : “Un jeune homme trop gros” (1978), “La Folie originelle” (1991),”En vie” (1996), “Cochon farci” (1997), “Célébration d’un mariage improbable et illimité” (2002)… In collaboration with Transquinquennal, he wrote “Aux prises avec la vie courante”, “Est” and “La Femme et l’Autiste” between 1994 et 2000.

L'écriture de cet auteur, dont les nombreux textes sont publiés aux éditions de Minuit, est remarquable. Inventive, elle surprend, déstabilise parfois, voire dérange. Bernard Breuse, Miguel Decleire et Stéphane Olivier, les trois acteurs de « Convives », donnent à entendre cette langue comme si elle était la plus naturelle qui soit. Ils mettent alors en lumière de manière saisissante son propos poétique, hardi, voire provoquant, extravagant aussi. Servant admirablement cette verve, ce spectacle titille le plaisir, mais aussi l'intelligence, jusqu'à la faire sourire. L’article complet
